Southard Clinic outpatient case files, 1912-1963.

Under the supervision of the Dept. of Mental Health, the Massachusetts Mental Health Center and its predecessors have been responsible for providing residential and outpatient care and treatment for mentally ill persons--prior to 1967 specializing in acute psychotic disorders and since then serving more generaly the Boston metropolitan area. The outpatient department, known as the Southard Clinic since the mid-1940s, is responsible for providing outpatient, diagnostic, and emergency services. After diagnosis, patients seen there are treated through continuing outpatient visits, commitment to a state hospital, or care at a private facility; they include persons recently discharged from state hospitals requring after-care visits, as well as those referred by physicians, hospitals, and courts; also persons presenting themselves voluntarily. Outpatient case files are created to provide a record of diagnosis and treatment.

Southard (Harvard, M.D. 1901) was Bullard Professor of Neuropathology at Harvard Medical School from 1909 to 1920 and first director of the Boston Psychopathic Hospital, 1912-1920.
